Production of the short fillm 'NOISE' leveraged LOCCOL's pre-production tools and creatives to help plan and execute production of the film.
The production team used LOCCOL along with Google mape integration to 'Fly' accross the desert and select an ideal filming location. Producer Ryan Gibbs flew out to California to capture all of the exterior assets of the film. While in the California desert, Ryan was able to join LOCCOL using 'Star Link Internet' along with Scott Lynch Located in Chicago at the time.
This allowed the team to determine the best course of action for what Digital assets to capture. While Ryan Captured those assets, Scott was able to Test Camera Angles, Set design, Envorinement lighting and more.
Filming in a Tent can be a logistical nightmare for a production. for a short that takes place entriely in a tent we needed to ensure we knew the limitations for camera angles, placment, actor movement and more.
Before our Art Department even modified an existing tent, we used a 3D mockup of a tent inside of LOCCOL alongsde a motion captured actress, to act out the entire short. This proccess only took an afternoon, but allowed us great insight on our piece.
Once the digital recreation of the scene was complete, we started testing camera angles. After creating simple hand drawn Floorplans and Storyboards, our Director enetred the scene in VR from his apartment. In VR he was able to determine what parts of the Storyboards worked for his vision, what needed tweaking and what the real world constraints would be for filming a particular scene. LOCCOL aided in his understanding of the scenes geometry, allowing him to ensure that every angle chosen had purpose.
Better yet, we even were able to import our Cinematographers exact Camera Specs so that these virtual cameras mirrored the real world camera we were filming with 1:1
With LOCCOL, as soon as our Director placed a camera in the scene it creates and automatic export of varying types of documentation. It created a 'One Sheet' whcih shows the camera Frame, a mini-floor plan for that specific camera, camera settings, a shot description and more. This sheet was integral to our filming, as we only needed to reference this sheet whenever we needed to move to another setup on production day.
It also exports a Storyboard for that angle as well.
Additionally, once all cameras are placed and the Director and Cinematographer approves all angles and framing we can export even more automatic documentation.
Full Floorplans - Showcasing every camera angle, this aided in out shooting schedule as we were able to quickly identify where the best and most effecient next setup would be.
High Quality Storyboards - Since we have precise camera specs, and angles that match our scene 1:1 we can export full storyboard docs that showcase that the framing should look like exactly.
Animated camera angles - Because we have the scene fully animated in 3D we can also experiment with camera moves to narrow down the exact intent of an angle.
Animated storyboards - with LOCCOL we exported animated videos of each cameras angle. This allowed us to hand over preliminary shots to our editor to start preparing a initial pass of the scene. Giving us the ability to determine which angles are preffered in the edit, what angles are missing to tell the story (Thusly avoiding pickups later on) and it allowed us to show our production team the general idea for the scene as a whole.
